Let us try to leap into spring even if the daily news on the current situation is not really a morale booster. But did we even have winter? With our club activities we do try to bring on some brighter days and to lighten the mood.
Our first coffee morning in our clubroom was a great success. Over 40 members attended and thanks to the generosity and hard work of some of our club members the clubroom was decorated and the table was laden with goodies!
At 9am we had a bit of a panic attack as our coffee machines decided that they did not want to perform their duty! After two years of retirement they had no wish to get back into "work mode". Two members dashed back home and collected their own machines - morning was saved! We would also like to thank our club members for their very generous donations. We collected Fr. 1000. -- (One thousand) which we donated, in the name of the Anglo-Swiss Club Locarno, to the UNHCR, United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
Our "Opening Dinner" on Wednesday, 23 March 2022 at the Bottega del Vino, Locarno is fully booked and we have a waiting list. I sincerely hope that by then we will be able to raise our glasses to peace. In any case it will be a great occasion to catch up with old and new friends.
Thursday, 31 March 2022, 6pm at the Hotel La Palma au Lac, Muralto
Professor Louise Harra, Director of the World Radiation Centre of the Physical Meteorological Observatory in Davos (PMOD/WCR) and affiliated professor at the Institute of Particle Physics and Astrophysics of ETH Zurich.
Professor Harra's talk is entitled "Getting closer to the sun" and she will be describing the European Space Agency space mission "Solar Orbiter". Launched in 2020, it was in a cruise phase until the end of 2021. It is now about to embark on its first close encounter with the Sun - reaching a third the distance from the Sun to the Earth. Professor Harra will describe why we want to get this close, what we are learning, and why it's important for all of us.
After the talk we can enjoy an aperitif and we also have a chance to talk to Professor Harra personally.
We are requesting a small participation fee of Fr. 10. -- for the aperitif. Thank you!
And what are we going to do in April? Due to the current situation we are organizing our activities month by month. I am sure you understand.
